Earth Science deals with the study of the materials comprising rocks and minerals, as well as fluid inclusions within them. For such studies it is important to measure the chemical composition of minerals, and to understand their internal chemical zoning. The “bulk composition” of a mineral can be measured for example by laser ablation spot analyses, and internal chemical zoning can be revealed by laser ablation imaging. The icpTOF is a powerful tool for geochemical applications when coupled to laser ablation for sample introduction. A particular strength of the icpTOF is high-speed, high-resolution, multi-element imaging of minerals.
