Fassbender and co-workers investigate the isotope characteristics of monomethylmercury in industrial canal sediments. For such measurements, species-specific isotope dilution (SSID) and separation techniques such as gas chromatography (GC) are required. The authors show that the icpTOF 2R is capable of such measurements and provides similar accuracy and precision for mercury isotopes as quadrupole and sector-field mass spectrometers. Moreover, the icpTOF can be expected to excel over these more routine mass spectrometers when multiple isotope systems are to be investigated.
