In a recent publication in Analytical Chemistry and a poster presented at EWCPS 2017, researchers from Ghent University demonstrate a combined approach for 3D compositional profiling of a small water flea. Using the icpTOF equipped with a high-throughput rapid laser ablation system, they imaged a total of 59 thin sections at 5 µm lateral resolution in less than 30 h. The 3D image was reconstructed from the large data set of 2D maps using a data fusion approach and μ-CT data. Using the complete, all-element mass spectra recorded by the icpTOF, they introduced a multi-isotope extraction approach in order to improve the signal-to-noise ratios.
