Monodisperse Microdroplets: A Tool That Advances Single-Particle ICP-MS Measurements

The goal of single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) is to detect individual nanoparticles (NPs). As the signal duration resulting from such NPs is usually < 0.5 ms, a high time resolution is required as is provided by TOFWERK’s icpTOF instruments.

Gundlach-Graham and Mehrabi show that microdroplets, produced in a microdroplet generator (MDG), can serve as proxies for NPs and may thus be used for calibration purposes. The authors explain 1) how microdroplets can be used for calibration of NP element mass and particle-number concentration, and 2) how the measurement of microdroplets with specific analyte masses helps to improve sp-ICP-TOFMS data analysis strategies.
