How these drugs interact with tumor cells and activate the immune system is still not fully understood.\u00a0Wernitznig\u00a0et al. present a multi-method investigation to better understand the influence of plecstatin-1 on tumor cells. The\u00a0icpTOF\u00a02R was used for high-resolution laser ablation\u00a0imaging\u00a0with inductively\u00a0coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-TOFMS) to determine the multi-element distribution in multicellular tumor spheroids after treatment with plecstatin-1.\u00a0The elemental images were acquired at a rate of 100 pixels per second and a spatial resolution of 2.5\u00a0\u00b5m.\u00a0Highest ruthenium accumulation was observed\u00a0within proliferating cells\u00a0in the\u00a0outer rim of the spheroid sections,\u00a0in comparison to quiescent cells\u00a0in the center.\u00a0In addition to\u00a0ruthenium, several elements of biological\u00a0importance\u00a0were quantified by LA-ICP-TOFMS.\u00a0For example, the\u00a0distribution of\u00a0phosphorus followed the same pattern as\u00a0that of\u00a0ruthenium,\u00a0with higher levels in proliferating cells and lower levels in quiescent cells.\u00a0Proliferating cells\u00a0also\u00a0displayed higher levels of magnesium and calcium.\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plecstatin-1 Induces an Immunogenic Cell\u00a0Death Signature in Colorectal\u00a0Tumor\u00a0Spheroids\u00a0 Wernitznig et al.
