DOI: 10.1016/bs.coac.2021.01.008

In this book chapter, Alexander Gundlach-Graham describes the single-particle inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-TOFMS) method. After introducing the method and comparing it to conventional sp-ICP-MS, TOFMS is described, highlighting the benefits of fast, full elemental spectra acquisition provided by time-of-flight mass spectrometers such as TOFWERK’s icpTOF. Gundlach-Graham explains the design of sp-ICP-TOFMS experiments in detail – including background determinations, quantification of particle-number concentrations and element-mass per particle, as well as external calibration strategies. Importantly, a novel strategy of online microdroplet calibration is discussed which can be expected to pave the way for high-throughout multiplexes quantification of single particles.
