TOFWERK is making the world a cleaner place through innovative solutions for chemical analysis.
Our scientists and engineers design, manufacture, and optimize high performance mass spectrometers for new applications to support researchers and industrial customers around the world. We are headquartered in Thun, Switzerland, with regional offices in China and the United States. Our diverse team members cultivate a collaborative and creative work environment. Together we deliver the highest quality products and service to ensure our customers’ success.
Description
TOFWERK is recruiting an Early-Stage Researcher (PhD student) within the framework of the CLOUD-DOC Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (part of the EU’s Horizon Europe research programme). The Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) will be employed for a period of 36 months at TOFWERK (Thun, Switzerland). The PhD student will be supervised in collaboration with the University of Lyon (which will award the PhD) under Dr. Matthieu Riva, and be one of 12 PhD students enrolled in a European network involving nineteen entities from academia and industry.
The CLOUD-DOC network investigates various aspects of aerosol nucleation and growth, cloud formation and aerosol-contribution to climate change. The major research activity of the network will be three sets of joint experiments carried out at the CLOUD aerosol chamber at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) to which all ESRs contribute. At the CLOUD chamber, nucleation experiments are performed using highly innovative instrumentation. A well-structured research and training plan is set up for every ESR and each candidate works under a comprehensive, quality-controlled supervision framework. The ESRs are brought together for network training events such as summer schools and workshops for data analysis. Courses are taught by world leading experts. Transferable skills developed in training include scientific writing, presenting talks, interaction with media, entrepreneurship, IPR, and management.
TOFWERK (Thun, Switzerland) designs, develops and manufactures end-user-, OEM- and customized state-of-the-art time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOFMS) and ion mobility spectrometers for scientific, industrial, and scientific research. Several mass spectrometers for aerosol analysis and other atmospheric applications were already developed in our facilities and are now used widely around the world.
The successful applicant will be involved in instrument development, focusing on the hyphenation of TOFWERK mass spectrometers with chromatographic separation stages and chemical ionization. Although based at Tofwerk in Switzerland, the applicant will carry our some work work in Geneva, and also at the University of Lyon in France. Research tasks will focus on the optimization and successful usage of the developed instrumentation for the CLOUD experiments, with novel ion optical and measurement techniques.
Location: TOFWERK Headquarters, Thun, Switzerland
Benefits
The post is offered under the conditions of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network Scheme and therefore attracts a salary that is determined by the regulations of this scheme.
Eligibility Criteria
Researchers must be early-stage researchers (ESR), i.e. at the date of recruitment be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. “Full-time equivalent research experience” is measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate (either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited or seconded) – even if a doctorate was never started or envisaged. Researchers must comply with the mobility rule: Researchers may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment (ITN). For “international European interest organizations” or “international organizations”, the researchers may not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline/recruitment, in the same appointing organization. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
