In this contribution, researchers from RIKILT compare the performance of two quadrupole-based and two time-of-flight (TOF)-based Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Mass Spectrometers for multi-element single nanoparticle ICP-MS analysis of composite nanoparticles. AuAg core-shell, BiVO4,(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiOand steel nanoparticles composed of Fe, Cr, Ni, and Mo were utilized for this purpose. The authors describe detection limits, accuracy and precision of size and concentration determination of every instrument and conclude that quantitative composition analysis of multi-element single particles is possible only with TOFMS.

The authors conclude spICP-TOFMS instruments, such as the icpTOF, show true “multiple-element capacity” and emphasize the importance of further development of standardized methods for multi-element single nanoparticle ICP-MS of real world samples.
