Background
Vehicle Interior Air Quality (VIAQ)
Vehicle interior air quality (VIAQ) is affected by the outgassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from automotive interior components such as leather, plastic, foam, carpets, adhesives, and electronics. At high concentrations in small enclosed spaces, these VOCs have the potential to negatively affect the health of drivers and passengers. As a result, car manufacturers and governments have created standards and regulations to monitor a range of toxic VOCs from new cars.
Testing vehicle interior air quality is demanding with a multitude of different factors to consider. VOC regulations vary country to country and testing standards and protocols are specific to materials and depend on the car manufacturer. In addition to these regulatory considerations, the chemical diversity of the VOCs present in automotive interiors requires a testing method that is sensitive, fast, and able to produce results in real-time. The current chromatographic method used in the automotive industry is not compatible with fast screening on the production line and can cause delays in product acceptance and loss of profit.
The TOFWERK real-time VOC analyzer – Vocus CI-TOF offers a turnkey solution for fast, sensitive online VOC and odorous compound analysis.
Solutions
Real-Time VOC Analysis for VIAQ Using the Vocus CI-TOF
- Highest sensitivity available with sub-ppt limits of detection
- High mass resolving power enables confident identification of individual compounds from complex vehicle interior emissions
- Real-time and fast data output allow on-site and production assembly line screening
- High throughput analysis of material emissions with automated headspace autosampler
The high resolving power of the Vocus CI-TOF mass spectrometer enables identification of individual compounds from complex vehicle material emissions, without any sample preparation or GC separation, leading to a real-time and fast data output. These features of Vocus CI-TOF make measurements of vehicle material emissions and VIAQ very efficient and simple. The real-time output and fast response make Vocus an ideal instrument for fast screening of all target VOCs on the production line with high throughput.
The system can also be used in the lab for analyzing gas samples in bags or canisters. With the integrated multifunctional headspace autosampler, the headspace of up to 360 samples can be analyzed. This combination of the Vocus CI-TOF and the automated headspace autosampler enables rapid quantification and high throughput testing of VOCs.
