Examination on Simultaneous Multi-Element Isotope Ratio Measurement by Inductively Coupled Plasma Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

This work demonstrates the capabilities of the icpTOF for simultaneous multi-element isotope ratio measurement.

Ohata, Masaki, and Hiroyuki Hagino
Ohata and Hagino compared two ICP-TOFMS instruments and tested their performance for multi-element isotope ratio measurements. Isotope pairs of 10 different elements in a concentration range of 1 – 100 ng/mL were evaluated for their potential use in Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry (IDMS) experiments. In this comparison the icpTOF was found to provide linear calibration curves for all elements investigated and was the only instrument that produced consistent isotope ratio results. With this basic requirement established for the icpTOF, IDMS was successfully tested for the determination of Cd, Hg and Pb and certified concentration values were obtained.
